The Government provides a truly free subsidy (you don’t pay it back, not like a WINZ loan) when a child less than 16 years old needs assessments from an eye specialist, ano glasses or patches.

This is designed to make glasses affordable, and if your child has poor vision or a turned eye they then qualify for extra funding to make treatment possible.

$284/year is capped and must pay for both eye tests and any glasses required. This is for children who do NOT have decreased vision in 1 eye, or a ‘squint’, and since they only need 1 visit per year it can cover all costs in many cases.

If there is a risk of permanently reduced vision or ‘squint’ then a lot of extra funding is there – technically nothing should be paid for glasses and patching.

However, a lost pair of glasses is not covered before the calendar year in either case, unless we find the glasses to have changed. Nor is a tint or dark glasses in most situations.
